D in Ford 4.0 Timing Chain issues! I'll drop the lower oil pan and have a look, although I think my oil was recently changed. 1) Drain the oil, remove the lower oil pan & oil pump screen; looking for broken pieces of plastic TimingGuides. ~ If you find plastic pieces you've definitely got broken Timing Guides.
Use your scanner software or pressure gage and verify that the pressure is in range. '05 Aviator does not have a fuel pressure port so you need to use scanner data. Vacuum leaks. Most rough idle issues are caused by vacuum leaks. So go through the engine carefully and use whatever means necessary to find the leaks.
Its unfortunate that the SOHC 4.0 has had more problems than would seem to. be expected. Since this engine appeared in 97 its been improperly installed. connecting rod bolts, oil pump problems, sticky throttle bodies, and this cam. chain tensioner thing seems like its been going on forever.

July 1999. I have the chitti chitti bang bang noise in my 1999 Ford Ranger, 4x4, 4.0L engine. It sounds more like a diesel engine than a gas powered engine when cold. Almost as if a few valves need adjusted. After the engine warms up, though, it is not so bad. It sounds more like a sporty gurgle at that point.
